Misfortunes Come in Three's

April 1986

11th- This is the first of two bad days in my life. Around 6pm, we load up my van to drive to the Keys to view Halley’s Comet. Along are Ed & Tina, Patrick, Carol, Joey & Lyz. We stop at several places, but there is too much light. Finally we end up at Mile Marker 78.5, just north of Marathon. I set up my camera on my tripod and hook up my remote shutter cord. I’m positive that I see the comet, and am vigorously keeping people from stepping in front of my camera. I’m making all kinds of timed exposures and getting some great shots with my new telephoto lens. After shooting 20 or 30 pictures, we head back to Miami with a camera full of great comet shots. When we get home, I try to rewind the film. It winds and winds. I open the camera in the dark to see about the problem. No problem- no film. ARRRRGGGHHHHH!!!

12th- Pete Mosher has won tickets on the radio to fly on the Concorde supersonic jet, from Miami International to somewhere down around Barbados, to view the comet from 40,000 feet up. Me and Crystal, Sharon, Carol and Buddy walk through the airport where Pete gets on an elevator to go the plane. At the elevator, a gentleman says he has an extra ticket, ($400), and would any of us be interested in it. We assume he wants to sell it, but when Pete returns, it seems the man was going to give it away. AAARRRRRGGGGGG!!!! #2. So a free ride on the Concorde was missed. As we are leaving the terminal, Jack Horkheimer, the Star Hustler of the Miami Planetarium, asks if he can interview me about the comet, to be on his TV show later that night.. So I tell him of the misfortunes of the last 2 days. It was a great interview. We rush home to catch the 11pm news. I stick a new tape in the VCR and get ready to record my moment of glory. There I am! It truly was a great interview, and I have it on tape! So I rewind it to watch again. In my haste, I accidentally record over the entire interview. It’s gone forever. AAAARRRGGGGG!!!!!#3.
